Is this also the case for maybe not as high paying, but specialised type roles, for example: video game development or design?

And another thing I thought of, what do you call it, if your choosing a regular role, like sales, but choosing it in an industry that requires some specialised training and will ‘always exist’ like, pharmaceutical sales?

I thought of these two areas/indutries, when thinking about the supply and demand equation.

Yep absolutely, great point!

Supply and demand is the reason sports and acting are so tough to break into.

Even at community theater level, directors get paid, musicians get paid but actors don't. Because so many are willing to do it for free.

Ahhhh Lucy I love this overview so much thank you! It really got me thinking about my own career and the 3F’s you mentioned- when I was younger I really just needed a job to ‘fund’ me and then as I got older and was reaching my 40s, I knew that I desperately wanted to move into fulfilment. But it took me years to figure out how I can merge fulfilment and funding! I am still on the journey of course, but it’s so important for us to be having these conversations earlier on given the amount of detrimental burn out we see across Industries. Thanks again!!!

Ah thanks so much for sharing Jules, fascinating! What have you figured out so far in combining 'fulfil me' and 'fund me'?

That if I take a moment to pause and reconnect with myself I can do work that lights me up leverages my unique skills and can fund me! For so long my internal belief system was that the more money i made in corporate, the more unhappy i was. And this became a reality! It took me quite a few years to more into a belief system where I can make money and enjoy it!

“Are you making a decision for you, or for others? For example, are you choosing a high-paying prestige career because you think the work will be genuinely satisfying to you, or doing something which saps your energy because you think other people will admire you?”

One of the most important questions I ever asked myself 👀

Me too! Curious, where did you land on yours Anna? (mine took me out of consulting!).

I think a version of this question has prompted a number of moves across my career. I left a dream job at Mecca to start a business, even though everyone in my life was like WHAT ARE YOU DOING because it genuinely was the best job I could have ever had. But I knew that it was time to move on and do something else. More recently, I made the hard call to move on from that business to create space. That decision ultimately led me to here - in a portfolio career I obsessed with doing things I love. It’s been a long journey of learning to listen to my gut and prioritise my own desires/needs/wants over what I think I “should” do or what might look “cool” from the outside. Life, hey?!

Haha oh it’s up in the essay!

It is! I missed that bit haha. I think I’m a mix of them all - one part of my portfolio career funds me (consulting and mentoring) and also challenges me intellectually, another part fulfils me (writing and sharing my ideas), and I’m still working towards the ‘fit’. I don’t have total flexibility in terms of my schedule with client work but I’m working towards a better balance, less client work and more of my own products. It’s a journey haha

It's an awesome journey! Where are you on fund / fulfil / fit me at the moment? Maxing out on all three?

What’s fund / fulfil / fit? I haven’t heard of this before haha! Assuming fund is $$, fulfil is how fulfilled I feel at the moment…but struggling to figure out fit 😂
